Difficult conversations about pay are another responsibility falling to middle managers as more states and localities enact salary transparency laws. Leslie Tarnacki, CHRO at WorkForce Software, talks with Worklife about how pay transparency laws may have an impact on middle management, they may now have the added responsibility of having challenging conversations with their team members about pay – and many may not feel prepared.

Tarnacki’s insights touch on the importance of middle managers going beyond their traditional role to understand and explain total compensation and being ready to speak about pay and the benefits package – even in the hiring process.

“Managers should be able to understand and explain total compensation including other incentives and benefits,” says Tarnacki. “Compensation really encompasses more than merely the salary piece of it.”
